Required Viewing Movies (RQV): REVIEW

Strengths

Gremlins is a wildly entertaining blend of comedy and horror.

The special effects hold up surprisingly well, creating both adorable and terrifying gremlins.

The film’s humor is slapstick and silly, perfectly complemented by the outlandish antics of the gremlins.

Despite the comedic tone, the film offers a surprising amount of heart, exploring themes of responsibility and the importance of following rules.

Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates share a sweet and believable on-screen chemistry.

Weaknesses

The tonal shift between goofy comedy and moments of genuine horror might be jarring for younger viewers.

The film’s violence can be surprising for a Christmas movie, with some creature deaths bordering on graphic.

The ending, while satisfying, relies on a convenient deus ex machina element.

Why Gremlins is Required Viewing

Gremlins is a holiday classic that defies categorization. It’s a funny, thrilling, and sometimes scary adventure that perfectly captures the chaotic spirit of the holiday season. While the violence and horror elements might not be suitable for very young children, “Gremlins” can be a delightful watch for families looking for a unique and entertaining holiday movie experience.
